A new poll found that support for a Democrat candidate for a race in Virginia had collapsed after the revelation that she had posted lurid videos of herself and her husband on a webcam for money.
Susanna Gibson is running as a Democrat for the 57th district of the Virginia House of Delegates, but her campaign was dealt a huge blow when the online sex webcam scandal exploded.
A new poll from Cygnal obtained by the New York Post showed that support for Gibson dropped from 49.5% to 38.9% after the damaging revelation.
Her Republican opponent, David Owen, had only a 4% lead over Gibson prior to the scandal. Gibson’s unfavorability rating has also skyrocketed from 12.5% to 45.2% among likely district voters.
“It’s no surprise that Ms. Gibson’s polling poorly,” said Aaron Evans, a spokesman for Owen’s campaign. “David Owen is remaining focused on his common-sense agenda of renewing the economy, lowering crime, and improving our schools for the future of Virginia families.”
Gibson confirmed the damaging story but tried to accuse Republicans of committing a “sex crime” in order to humiliate her.
“This is an illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me and my family. It won’t intimidate me and it won’t silence me,” said Gibson.
“My political opponents and their Republican allies have proven they’re willing to commit a sex crime to attack me and my family because there’s no line they won’t cross to silence women when they speak up,” she added.
She had maintained the account on Chaturbate even after she announced her campaign for the state legislature. She had streamed about a dozen sex videos to about 5,770 followers on the service under the screenname HotWifeExperience but has since taken the account down.
The district race will help decide which party takes control of the legislature in Virginia. The election to decide the victor of the 57th district will be held November 7.
Gibson is 40 years old and a mother of two.
