Home of Dem Los Angeles Mayoral Candidate Burglarized, Guns Stolen

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) says her home was burglarized over the weekend and two guns were stolen from the property.

Bass’s campaign said in a statement Saturday that the Friday break in of her Baldwin Vista home took place when no one was home, and no valuables besides the firearms were taken. Still, the burglary comes at a time of skyrocketing crime in the Golden State, something that is a major issue in Bass’s mayoral race against Republican businessman Rick Caruso.

“Last night, I came home and discovered that my house had been broken into and burglarized,” Bass’s campaign statement read.

The statement continued by noting that the congresswoman, who opted to not seek re-election to her House seat to run for mayor, called the Los Angeles Police Department and officers responded to the scene. The campaign did not specify what types of firearms were stolen, though Bass’s team said the guns were “safely and securely stored.”

“Cash, electronics and other valuables” were not taken, however.

“It’s unnerving and, unfortunately, it’s something that far too many Angelenos have faced,” the statement continued.

LAPD officials told the Los Angeles Times that they were checking their records for further details about the incident, but declined to say more.

Thus far this year, 9,836 burglaries have been reported to the LAPD. That’s a 15% increase from this time last year. Shootings, retail theft, and carjackings have also seen a sharp rise since 2020. Both Bass and Caruso have pledged to crack down on crime if elected. Bass currently leads the billionare developer by double digits.
