Dem Who Backed Reparations Loses Reelection in Blowout

A councilwoman in a Colorado district lost her reelection bid by a wide voter margin, only a month after a video of her advocating for reparations was shared on social media.

The vote tally for the election in District 9 showed incumbent candidate Candi CdeBaca lose to challenger Darrell Watson on Tuesday night, with Watson getting 60.71% of the votes while CdeBaca trailed far behind at 39.29%.

CdeBaca’s 21.42% margin loss marked one of the biggest blowout losses in the last 10 years, according to KDVR.

In May, CdeBaca was seen in a video in which she argued that white-owned businesses ought to be taxed more as a means of reparations which could then be distributed to minority-owned business owners.

“Capitalism was built on stolen land, stolen labors, and stolen resources,” CdeBaca said at the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance.

Following her Tuesday night defeat, CdeBaca stated that while the election results were not what she had hoped for, the intent of the election was to bring “more progressive candidates to the table.”

The councilwoman also stated the election was not about her, but rather about “building power for community.”

“I’m so grateful for our community, for everyone who poured their hearts and souls into this movement,” read CdeBaca’s statement. “I will not stop fighting alongside my community for a city that truly cares for all of its people, because District 9 and Denver are my heart, always.”

The only race that had a wider spread between its winner and loser than CdeBaca’s loss was the 2019 city runoff election, in which current Denver City Council President Pro Tem Amanda Sandoval won 66.61% of the vote in her District 1 race. Sandoval was running against Mike Somma in the 2019 election.

Other election results from Tuesday saw mayor-elect Mike Johnston of Denver elected to his position, defeating his opponent Kelly Brough. An advantage Johnston had in this race was a plethora of funds he received to support his candidacy, which was much more than Brough’s.
