Republican leaders in the House of Representatives have initiated a formal impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. Spearheaded by Chairmen James Comer (R-KY), Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Jason Smith (R-MO), the move marks a major escalation in the ongoing investigations into the Biden family’s foreign business dealings and the President’s involvement.
The inquiry, as detailed in a memorandum from September, focuses on several key allegations. The most prominent among these is the claim that the Biden family, including the President’s son, Hunter Biden, received over $24 million from foreign sources between 2014 and 2019. These funds reportedly originated from countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, and China.
The complexity of the transactions, which the Committees described as “exceedingly complex,” suggests a deliberate effort to obscure the origin and flow of these funds. This aspect of the investigation points to potential ethical and legal violations, casting a growing shadow over the Biden administration.
Moreover, the inquiry alleges direct involvement of President Biden in these foreign business dealings. Contrary to his previous public statements, evidence suggests that Joe Biden was not only aware of but actively participated in his family’s business ventures.
“Joe Biden, as Vice President and/or President, abused his office of public trust by knowingly participating in a scheme to enrich himself or his family by giving foreign interests the impression that they would receive access to him and his office in exchange for payments to his family or him … As reviewed above, Joe Biden was called into business meetings,” the memorandum stated.
The House Oversight Committee’s investigation has brought to light that these were not mere personal transactions from Hunter Biden’s account, but payments from a corporate entity that has been receiving funds from various sources, including China.
This is particularly concerning given the ongoing Department of Justice investigation into Hunter Biden for allegations of tax evasion and other serious offenses such as using Owasco P.C. as a conduit.
The Republican-led Committees also accused the Biden Administration of obstructing the criminal investigation into Hunter Biden. Allegations of Department of Justice personnel blocking inquiries and impeding prosecution efforts are particularly troubling. If proven, these actions could point to a deeper malfeasance within the administration, potentially implicating the President himself.
According to IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley’s sworn testimony, FBI and IRS investigators planned to interview Hunter on December 8, 2020. However, on December 7, 2020, FBI headquarters tipped off Secret Service headquarters and the Biden transition team about the planned actions for the following day. This account was confirmed during a transcribed interview with a former FBI Supervisory Special Agent.
The memorandum outlines the purpose of the impeachment inquiry, emphasizing its role in determining whether President Biden has committed impeachable offenses. These could include bribery, abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and other high crimes and misdemeanors. The inquiry aims to gather the necessary information to assess the President’s conduct and recommend appropriate actions, including the drafting of articles of impeachment.
The decision to embark on the impeachment carries substantial political risks and implications a year before the election. It sets the stage for a contentious process, but Republican leaders seem resolute in their pursuit.
