A 21-year-old immigrant from Mexico, Lucia Garcia, was arrested on May 20 after throwing her newborn baby in the trash at a New York City hospital and now claims she did not know she was pregnant and she thought what she threw away “was just blood.”
Speaking to the New York Post, Garcia said, “I didn’t know I put my baby in the trash until the nurse told me later.”
Garcia, who has been charged with one count of acting in a manner injurious to a child, two counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of assault, spoke to the Post on Saturday while at her Staten Island home.
She was arraigned on Monday and has an upcoming June 16 court date. According to the Post, she is seeking asylum in the US.
Garcia’s 41-year-old father, Ambrosio, took his daughter to Staten Island University Hospital after she complained about feeling sick.
Ambrosio Garcia previously told the New York Post that “She said she had her period when she came out of the bathroom” and that “she had a lot of blood on her.”
At the hospital, Lucia Garcia was found covered in blood. The cleaning staff along with a police officer providing security for the hospital reportedly heard the newborn baby’s cries before moving to rescue the infant.
The child was found in a trash can. The baby was transferred from Staten Island University Hospital to a Manhattan hospital, NYU Langone, in stable condition.
Garcia said she later remembered, “I was in handcuffs in my bed at the hospital” and that a cop was next to her. She was later arraigned from her bedside before being released.
“I don’t know when I’m going to get him back,” Garcia said. “I want him back. I want to take care of him. I just want my baby back.”
10 months ago, Garcia immigrated to the US from Mexico and, according to the Post, she is seeking asylum in the US. She said she met the father of the child via Facebook. Police confiscated her phone, which Garcia says has rendered her unable to contact the father.
“How am I going to tell him when I don’t have any way to contact him?” Garcia asked, adding, “He is going to have to pay for all of this.”
Garcia’s father said he intends to find the father.
“At first, I didn’t know if I was ready to be a mom,” Garcia said. “I thought I had made an error — but now I just want him here with me.”
