President Joe Biden is facing harsh opinions from his own party, as polls show that a significant portion of Democratic voters do not want him to run for president again in 2024.
A Messenger/Harris poll released Tuesday found that a majority of overall voters do not want Biden or former President Donald Trump to seek another term next November at 67% and 55%, respectively. With Biden, however, 40% of Democrats believe he should not run for another term, compared to 25% of Republicans who say the same for Trump.
This is the latest poll in a series of recent surveys showing Biden losing favor with voters of his own party and key voting blocs that helped him secure a win against Trump in 2020.
A recent Wall Street Journal poll found that over two-thirds of Democrats believe Biden is too old to be commander in chief, the latest result after a string of incidents involving the president, including trips and falls, malapropisms, and losing his train of thought.
Some Democrats are worried that the president will not be able to turn around enough support before the general election next November, while others have brushed off concerns about polling as too early to make a difference.
The Messenger’s poll is the most recent to show Trump with a lead over Biden — the former president leads this one 47% to 40%. Voting split largely along party lines, but independent voters backed the former Republican president, 45% to 32%. In a four-way race, both Trump and Biden saw a 7% decrease in support. Trump received 40%, Biden received 33%, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. received 14%, and independent candidate Cornel West received 2%.
Third-party organizations and candidates have received heavy backlash from Democratic lawmakers and allies who have accused independent tickets of working against Biden.
Democrats have accused No Labels, a third-party organization, of wanting to aid the GOP next November with its work to launch a unity ticket in several battleground states that Trump is now leading in — something the group has repeatedly denied.
Biden also received a new low approval rating of 39% in the Messenger poll, two days after hitting a record-low approval rating of 40% in an NBC News poll released Sunday. Only 29% of independents approve of Biden’s work as president, another indication that Biden’s chances of appealing to centrist voters may be slipping further away.
The poll found that, despite not wanting him to run for a second term, Democrats continue to prefer Biden as their 2024 candidate. In a question asking about the Democratic primary, Biden led with 65%, followed by Marianne Williamson at 5% and Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) at 4%. Eleven percent said they would back someone else.
HarrisX conducted the Messenger/Harris poll between Wednesday and Sunday with 3,017 registered voters and a margin of error of 1.8 percentage points.
