Social Security Update: Why You Won’t Be Getting a Payment This Week

Social Security recipients who are usually paid in the second week of the month may not be paid until next week.

The Social Security Administration distributes benefits to retired Americans, individuals with disabilities and surviving family members of deceased claimants. As there are several categories of payments and a vast number of payees, not everyone is paid on the same date each month.

More often than not, Social Security payments made to some retired Americans are made in the second week of the month. But this month, retirees whose birthdays fall between the first and 10th of any month are set to receive their payment in the third week of the month, on June 12.

As June began on a Saturday, the payment is scheduled to fall in the third week of the month. While it may seem like recipients are having to wait longer than usual, this isn’t the case. Payees with birthdays in the first 10 days of the month are always paid on the second Wednesday.

In 2024, June is not the only month in which this is expected to happen. According to the SSA’s schedule, third-week payments are set to take place in August and November.

A second change for June applies to Supplemental Security Income, which is usually paid on the first of every month. However, June’s payment was made a day early, on May 31, meaning recipients received two payments last month.

This does not amount to an additional payment, meaning recipients did not receive any extra benefits. The payment was made early because the usual disbursement date fell on a Saturday. “We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment,” the SSA wrote in a 2022 blog post. “It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”

Beneficiaries who receive only SSI are, more often than not, paid on the same day as retirement claimants. However, this month, retirees who have been claiming since before May 1997 or who receive SSI and retirement benefits are expected to get their payments on June 3.

The full schedule of June 2024 payments is as follows:

May 31

SSI payments were made on May 31. For those who receive SSI and Social Security benefits, payments were scheduled for May 31 and June 3, respectively.

June 12

Those with birthdays that fall between the first and 10th of any month should receive their payment on June 12.

June 18

Claimants with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month should be paid on June 18.

June 25

Those born between the 21st and 31st of any month should have their benefits paid on June 25.
