Actor Morgan Freeman said in an interview over the weekend that he despises the concept of Black History Month because black history is a part of American history.
Freeman, who is black, made the remarks during an interview with Variety while discussing his past projects, including the Civil War series “The Gray House.”
“I detest it. The mere idea of it,” Freeman said. “You are going to give me the shortest month in a year? And you are going to celebrate ‘my’ history?! This whole idea makes my teeth itch. It’s not right.”
“My history is American history,” he continued.
“It’s the one thing in this world I am interested in, beyond making money, having a good time and getting enough sleep.”
“If you don’t know your past, if you don’t remember it, you are bound to repeat it,” he later added.
“Do you know this song? ‘To everything, there is a season.’ It really, really works in show business. You are trying to sell something 15 years ago and nobody even looks at you. Then they go: ‘Didn’t you have a project, some time ago? Do you still have it?’ Life is like that, in this industry. You have got something you think is important, but trying to convince others is the difficult part.”
Freeman has made similar remarks in the past about Black History Month, saying last year that it was an “insult,” along with being called an “African-American.”
“I don’t subscribe to that title,” Freeman said at the time.
”Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African-American.’ What does it really mean?”
He also detested Black History Month back in 2005, saying that he didn’t want it because “Black history is American history.”
Spot on as usual, Mr. Morgan! There is only one race, the human one! Have black people had a very positive affect on our history? Yes, they have, but so has every other ethnic category of humanity. We also have “Pride” month, which is a kick in the teeth to every heterosexual in the nation. It’s all because someone’s feeliings were hurt, and somehow got the attention of congress that passes these crazy rememberances.
I believe democrats like to have Black History Month and all the other “stuff” Morgan Freeman references in order to CREATE division. That is all they seem to do.
Correct, it’s just a way to divide Americans.
The same as allowing “black churches “, “black universities”, “black unions”.
I thought we outlawed segregation!?!?
Do we want to go back to segregated public schools, segregated military units, segregated neighborhoods??
I really wish the US would do away with dual citizenships. Either you are a US Citizen or you aren’t. Choose who you are loyal to and sign the line.
Hey Morgan…..me too!!
