George Soros on Trump Prosecutor Alvin Bragg: “I Didn’t Fund Him and I Don’t Know Him”

Following the indictment of former President Donald Trump, many are noting Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s backing by Democrat billionaire donor George Soros.

Media outlets have attempted to suggest that Bragg isn’t Soros-backed, claiming this is because Soros has never met the Manhattan DA despite the billionaire’s financial backings.

CNBC, according to records and people familiar with both men, reported that “the reality of Bragg’s links to Soros does not entirely match the picture painted by Republican lawmakers who aim to use ties between the men to discredit the probe.”

Citing a March 18 tweet from Ohio Sen. JD Vance which read in part, “Alvin Bragg is bought by George Soros,” CNBC wrote that “there’s no proof” to this statement.

A Soros advisor told the outlet that the Democrat billionaire donor “has never met or spoken to Alvin Bragg.”

CNBC notes that Soros in 2021 donated $1 million to the Color of Change PAC, a racial justice group that attempts to influence corporate and government policy around the country. In the same year, the Soros-funded Open Society Policy Center donated $7 million to the group’s separate 501(c)(4) arm.

Those familiar with the contributions told CNBC that Soros and his organization’s donation was not specifically earmarked to be used to back Bragg’s campaign, nor to be used to pressure the DA, but the donation from Soros directly came days after the PAC endorsed Bragg for district attorney.

A Color of Change official told CNBC that the group spent around $500,000 to back Bragg.

CNBC notes that Soros’ son, Jonathan, and his wife, donated a combined $20,000 to Bragg’s campaign.

Speaking with Semafor, Soros said “I did not contribute to his campaign and I don’t know him.”

“I think some on the right would rather focus on far-fetched conspiracy theories than on the serious charges against the former president,” Soros added.

The Hill wrote that Soros “has often been the subject of right-wing attacks and some conspiracy theories based on the large donations he has made to Democratic candidates over the years,” noting comments made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The outlet also cited the Anti-Defamation League, reporting that ” conspiracy theories surrounding Soros have falsely attempted to cast him as controlling global society, leaning into antisemitic myths.”

In response to the reporting, the Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro wrote, “Media’s new take drops: if you say a prosecutor is Soros-backed, that’s false unless George Soros is literally massaging that prosecutor’s back RIGHT NOW.”

“YES Soros gave $1M to the PAC supporting Bragg but NO he has not gone on vacay with him so (FACT CHECK!) therefore the NBC propagandists say it’s not true he’s backed by the guy who gave $1M to back him. However much you loathe the corporate media, it’s nowhere near enough,” wrote the Federalist Editor-in-Chief Mollie Hemingway.

There is a name for the PAC that backed Bragg. It’s called a “cutout”, and it’s a method used by people like Soros to provide “plausible deniability.” Other’s that use cutouts: CIA, FBI, Organized Crime.
