Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., threw cold water on President Biden’s hopes to pass an assault weapons ban during the lame duck Congress on Sunday.
Murphy argued that the votes for such a bill are “probably not” there for Democrats, despite the president’s push to enact a ban following a spate of shootings in recent weeks. The 50-50 split in Congress means Democrats would need 10 Republicans to defect and vote for the ban in order to overcome a filibuster.
“I’m glad that President (Joe) Biden is gonna be pushing us to take a vote on an assault weapons ban,” he told CNN’s Dana Bash. “The House has already passed it. It’s sitting in front of the Senate. Does it have 60 votes in the Senate right now? Probably not, but let’s see if we can try to get that number is close to 60 as possible.”
“If we don’t have the votes, then we’ll talk to [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer and maybe come back next year, with maybe an additional senator, and see if we can do better,” he added.
Biden first called for an assault weapons ban following the shooting at the Club Q nightclub in Colorado earlier this month. The suspect in that case, who described himself as non-binary, is accused of using an AR-15-style rifle to murder five people at the LGBTQ nightclub.
“Gun violence continues to have a devastating and particular impact on LGBTQI+ communities across our nation and threats of violence are increasing. We saw it six years ago in Orlando, when our nation suffered the deadliest attack affecting the LGBTQI+ community in American history,” Biden wrote in response to the attack.
“We must address the public health epidemic of gun violence in all of its forms. Earlier this year, I signed the most significant gun safety law in nearly three decades, in addition to taking other historic actions. But we must do more. We need to enact an assault weapons ban to get weapons of war off America’s streets,” he added.
Biden reiterated his push on Thanksgiving Day, though appeared to conflate “assault weapons” with all semi-automatic weapons, which make up a large swath of rifle, handgun, and shotgun purchases in the U.S. A semi-automatic weapon automatically reloads each shot but only fires one round for each trigger pull.
“The idea we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick. Just sick,” Biden said during a press event in Nantucket, Massachusetts. “I’m going to try to get rid of assault weapons.”
Talk about “GUN CONTROL” laws, we have 20k (thousand) laws in place thus far & talking about passing yet another law on assault weapons?

NJ lawmaker admits the current gun control bills have nothing to do with criminals, just controlling law-abiding responsible citizens.
The NJ Concealed Carry law (NJ Bill A4769 S3214 ) is designed to make getting a license to carry so complex that very few will be able to do it.
They want the process to obtain a carry permit to be extremely confusing, to require way too much time, and/or they want you to be unable to afford it.
The laws turn Second Amendment rights to carry into a privilege for the rich elite, and now no one can say I’m lying because bozo over here (Assembly bill’s primary sponsor, Joe Danielsen) just proved it when he said this:
“The last thing I want to say to people, and some of my own Democrats have commented to me, this does nothing [to] stop the illegal gun trade, or the illegal criminal, illegal possessions, or criminal content and… you’re right. This doesn’t. It was never supposed to address that. This is addressing the legal, law abiding, responsible citizens. That’s what it’s designed to do.”
Making it illegal for law-abiding citizens to carry a gun for self-defense makes it easier for criminals to murder and harder for law-abiding citizens to stop criminals from murdering.
That’s common sense that clearly isn’t very common in the age of government worship and over dependence.
“Democrat Throws Cold Water on Biden’s Hope of Gun Control.” This paaing of more laws to stop gun violence is nothing but a cirus drill and political posturing. There are already over 20,000 state and federal gun laws on the books in this country. Laws and guns are not the problem. It is human behavior caused by the post 1950s decline in family values, morals, rot & debauchery in the entertainment industry, and the destruction of the black family unit by government dependence.
Instead of banning or taking away our guns, follow the law and prosecute the people who do the shooting instead of letting the DA’s let people off who commit the crime.
