Conservative radio host Jim Bohannon died Saturday at the age of 78.
Bohannon passed away following a battle with esophageal cancer after stepping down from his longtime “Jim Bohannon Show” last month.
“His distinctive voice, wit and wisdom was aired on some 500 radio stations nationwide,” his obituary read.
“Jim has been honored to be the recipient of numerous awards in recognition of his talent and contributions to the radio industry. This includes his induction into the National Broadcasting Hall of Fame by the National Association of Broadcasters, the Missouri Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame, the National Radio Hall of Fame of the Museum of Broadcast Communication, and the Society of Professional Journalists, DC Chapter Hall of Fame,” it added.
Bohannon was born in 1944 in Corvallis, Oregon, where his father was stationed in the Army during World War II. His interest in radio began early, starting during his high school years. The well-known conservative voice also served in the Army during the Vietnam War, including a tour of duty in 1967-1968.
Prior to his three decades on the “Jim Bohannon Show,” he hosted “America in the Morning” and filled in for Larry King’s radio program. When King moved to CNN, Bohannon took over the spot and renamed the program as his own show.
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt released a statement upon the news of Bohannon’s death.
“Our industry has lost a legend in the passing of Jim Bohannon, who embodied the spirit of broadcasting,” he wrote. “His charismatic nature, distinct style and engaging programs have left an enduring mark on radio and the generations of audiences whose lives he touched.”
Many other tributes circulated online on behalf of Bohannon’s legacy. Dr. Daliah Wachs was among the many broadcasters impacted by his life.
“Jim Bohannon @jimbotalks has passed. He was a mentor to me and so supportive of my career. I can’t imagine the radio industry or this world without his talent, charm, humor and smile. Heaven gained an angel today,” she tweeted.

“Talkers” publisher Michael Harrison also noted Bohannon’s impact on the industry.
“Jim Bohannon was one of the greatest radio broadcasters of all time, plain and simple. His talent was only surpassed by the personal esteem in which his fellow broadcasters held him. He was the very definition of a ‘good guy’ through and through,” he said in a statement.
Fox 5-DC host Jim Lokay shared a touching tribute to Bohannon on Twitter following the news of his passing.
“Sad to hear about the passing of the great Jim Bohannon. When I would fill in on KDKA Radio, Jim would join me live for a segment ahead of his show. He was always gracious and welcoming, and his smart approach to the medium will be sorely missed. Godspeed,” Lokay wrote.

Bohannon is survived by his wife, Annabelle, and daughter, Elizabeth Smith, according to his obituary.
