Biden Vows to Ensure Abortion Access as Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Life

President Joe Biden made remarks on Friday in the wake of the release of a Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, and sending the decision-making capabilities on abortion legality back to the states. Biden, a Catholic, is squarely on the side of abortion being a right enshrined in the Constitution. The Supreme Court said unequivocally on Friday that it was not, and that ruling is clearly stated.

Biden said that the Court “took away the constitutional right from the American people that it had already recognized. It didn’t limit it,” he said, “they simply took it away.”

He said that “the court has done what they have never done before, expressly take away a constitutional right that is so fundamental, so many Americans have already been recognized.”

Biden also declared that Americans should cast single-issue votes for abortion-advocating politicians.

Biden spoke about what he sees as the results of the law, namely that women will be forced to carry children after rape or incest, and said that “poor women are going to be hit the hardest.” He said the “court literally taking America back 150 years,” and called it a sad day for the country.

Biden demanded that Congress must enact laws to enshrine abortion access into law, and said that Americans must vote for Democrats so that the right to terminate pregnancies is protected.

Biden said that his administration is unable to ensure abortion access via executive order, but that he would advocate for women to be able to legally cross state lines to access abortion, which is not illegal anyway. He also said that he would make sure abortion-inducing medications could be accessible in states where abortion will be limited.

As he decried the court’s decision, he encouraged activists to remain peaceful. Activists, such as Jane’s Revenge, have promised to not remain peaceful.

As part of his speech, Biden hinted at trying to expand the Supreme Court, which is currently limited to 9 justices, saying that’s he’s “overseen more Supreme Court confirmations than anyone today where this case was always discussed.”

And he blamed Trump, saying “It was three justices named by one President Donald Trump who are the core of today’s decision to abandon the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country.”

“Make no mistake this decision is a combination of a deliberate effort over decades, upset balance of our law,” he continued.
